New Graphic Novel “Overhearing History: A Revolutionary Saratoga Story” Brings America’s Founding Era to Life

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a compelling new educational initiative is shedding light on one of the nation’s most pivotal regions in the fight for independence. Overhearing History: A Revolutionary Saratoga Story is a graphic novel designed to engage young readers—and their families—with the rich, complex legacy of the Saratoga region during the American Revolution.
The Organizations Behind the Book
The book is the first major publication from the Campaign for Saratoga 250, a nonprofit established in 2023. The organization partners closely with the Saratoga 250 Commission, a chartered body formed by Saratoga County leadership with 13 appointed Commissioners led by Saratoga County Historian Lauren Roberts, with the shared mission to educate, promote, and preserve the legacy of the Battles of Saratoga—a key turning point in the Revolutionary War.
Bill Teator, Executive Director of the Campaign, explained the broader vision: “We’re working to make Saratoga’s revolutionary significance as widely known and celebrated as other historic centers like Philadelphia or Boston. This novel is just the beginning.”
About the Book
Overhearing History: A Revolutionary Saratoga Story is written by Anne Clothier and illustrated by Alex Portal. Targeted toward readers in grades 4 through 6, the graphic novel presents historically grounded narratives through the lens of a relatable 12-year-old protagonist named Nathaniel. Set in 1775 Saratoga—then part of Albany County—the story captures the uncertainty, tension, and daily life of a community on the verge of revolution.
“We wanted to make history accessible, but also emotionally resonant,” said Teator. “The book highlights themes like loyalty, justice, identity, and survival through perspectives that are often overlooked—like those of loyalists, enslaved individuals, women, Native Americans, and working-class settlers.”
With vivid illustrations and thoughtful discussion prompts, the book is ideal for both classroom use and family reading, blending education with entertainment—what the Campaign calls “edutainment.”
A Series with Vision
The release of Overhearing History is the first in a planned multi-book series. Future installments will follow Nathaniel and his community into 1776 and 1777, placing them in the heart of events leading up to the Saratoga Campaign and the broader fight for independence.
“As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Saratoga in 2027,” said Teator, “we want to provide young people with the context and stories that bring this revolutionary period to life.”
Where to Find the Book
The book is available in ebook and paperback formats, designed to be affordable and accessible to as many readers as possible. Importantly, 100% of net proceeds go back into supporting the Campaign for Saratoga 250’s mission to educate and preserve local Revolutionary War history.
Readers can purchase the book:
- Online (via major platforms and indie bookstore networks)
- At local retailers, including Impressions of Saratoga and Northshire Bookstore
The team behind the book hopes to see it adopted by schools, used in homes, and shared in communities throughout the region and beyond. “It’s more than a book,” said Teator. “It’s a window into the decisions, dilemmas, and defining moments that shaped the American spirit.”
