Rebekka Graziano: The Heart and Soul of Battleground Fitness

In the bustling heart of Saratoga Springs, New York, Rebekka Graziano, affectionately known as Reba, has carved out a vibrant space for fitness and community at Battleground Fitness. As the owner of this dynamic gym, Reba’s journey from a high-energy kid running laps in a field to a powerhouse fitness professional is nothing short of inspiring. In a recent episode of the Food for Thought podcast, hosted by Steven Zabala from Greenfork, Reba shared her story, her passion for movement, and the lessons she’s learned as a business owner and fitness advocate. Her infectious enthusiasm and down-to-earth approach make her a standout figure in the fitness world.
A Lifelong Love for Movement
Reba’s love for staying active started early. As she shared on the podcast, her mom used to recount stories of young Reba coming home from school, bursting with energy, and asking to sprint back and forth across a field to burn it off. This natural inclination for movement led her to explore various activities, from karate in her childhood to soccer and cross-country running during her school years. “I realized that I wanted to keep my body moving as long as I could through my life,” Reba told Steven, reflecting on how her teenage years shaped her career path.
A significant turning point came during her senior year of high school when a severe hip dislocation forced her to confront the fragility of the human body. Instead of letting the injury define her, Reba used it as a catalyst to learn more about rehabilitation and fitness. She initially pursued athletic training at SUNY Cortland but soon gravitated toward personal training and the group fitness atmosphere, where she found her true calling. “I went a little bit more general, and found the personal training group atmosphere, and kind of fell in love,” she said.
From Fit Strength to Battleground Fitness
Reba’s professional journey took her to Fit Strength and Conditioning, a gym where she spent six years honing her craft and building connections. When COVID hit in 2020, the fitness industry faced unprecedented challenges, and Reba found herself at a crossroads. Unwilling to sit still, she took her kettlebells and dumbbells to a local park, leading outdoor classes for the dedicated “Saratoga crew” who showed up at 7 a.m. to train. This resilience led to a pivotal moment: in October 2020, Reba opened Battleground Fitness on Maple Avenue in Saratoga.
Starting a gym during a global pandemic was no small feat. Reba recalled the early days of masks and outdoor workouts, but her determination paid off. Battleground Fitness quickly outgrew its original location, moving to a larger space to accommodate its growing community. Today, the gym at 426 Maple Avenue is a hub of energy with a welcoming vibe that draws in everyone from athletes to stay-at-home parents.
Lessons from the Gym and Beyond
Running Battleground Fitness has been a wild ride, as Reba described, filled with ups and downs that mirror the ebbs and flows of life itself. One of the biggest lessons she’s learned as a business owner is the challenge of separating work from personal life. “The hardest one is to separate life and business, because I just feel like sometimes I get so consumed and I don’t know how to turn it off,” she admitted. This candor highlights her deep commitment to her members, whom she considers a second family. From police officers to teachers to grandparents, Battleground’s diverse community is a testament to Reba’s ability to connect with people from all walks of life.
Her passion for helping others shines through in her coaching philosophy. Reba emphasizes inclusivity, offering modifications for every fitness level and encouraging members to focus on feeling good rather than chasing perfection. “If someone’s in there a little bit more advanced, we can push into that level. Otherwise, we can take it down or sub out a movement,” she explained. This approach ensures that everyone, from beginners to seasoned athletes, leaves the gym feeling empowered.
A Diverse Fitness Journey
Reba’s own fitness journey is as varied as the workouts she programs. From her cross-country running days to a stint in powerlifting—where she hit impressive lifts like a 365-pound back squat and deadlift—she’s explored multiple realms of fitness. Her powerlifting experience, including competing at the Arnold Classic in 2019, taught her about strategy, discipline, and the mental fortitude required to push through challenges.
At the time of this interview Reba was training for a Hyrox competition, a hybrid event that combines strength, endurance, and functional movements like sled pushes and burpees. “It’s a whole nother realm,” she said, excited about rediscovering her love for running, which she had stepped away from after her hip injury. Her ability to adapt and embrace new challenges reflects her belief in lifelong movement and growth.
Programming with Purpose
At Battleground Fitness, Reba’s programming is designed with longevity in mind. She structures workouts in four-week cycles, focusing on progressive overload with main lifts like squats and bench presses, while incorporating mobility and primal movements to keep things fresh. “The goal is to do this up into your 80s, 90s. Like, keep moving,” she said. Her recent shift to total-body workouts every day—balancing strength-focused sessions with higher-intensity, heart-pumping classes—ensures members get a well-rounded fitness experience without excessive soreness.
Reba’s approach counters common fitness myths, particularly the misconception that strength training leads to bulky muscles, especially for women. “It’s my biggest pet peeve in this industry,” she said, emphasizing that strength training enhances bone density, improves reaction time, and boosts confidence without necessarily adding mass. Her focus on functional movement and injury prevention resonates with members who want to live better, not just look better.
A Community That Cares
What sets Battleground Fitness apart is its sense of community. Reba’s ability to foster genuine connections is evident in the decade-long relationships she’s built with some members. “I love to see or hear someone say, ‘I’ve never done this, or I never thought I would do this in my life,’” she shared. Whether it’s helping someone hit a personal record or simply being there to listen, Reba’s gym is a place where people feel seen and supported.
Finding Balance
Reba’s philosophy extends beyond the gym. She advocates for a balanced approach to nutrition and life, embracing the 80/20 principle—eating well most of the time but enjoying treats like homemade banana bread or tater tots (her guilty pleasure) without guilt. “You still have to enjoy your life,” she said, dismissing the idea that fitness requires constant perfection. In answer to Food for Thought’s signature question: Her ideal last meal? A simple yet hearty spread of steak, tater tots, and strawberry shortcake, washed down with a tall glass of water.
